St Petersburg University is the oldest university in Russia. It was founded by Emperor Peter I in 1724. The University is a scientific, educational, and cultural centre of world importance. Since 2009, the University has had the right to set its own educational standards of higher education, and issue its own type of diploma. From 1 September 2016, it has had the right to hold thesis defences to award academic degrees according to its own rules. The University implements more than 400 educational programmes at all levels: from general education to clinical residency. It also provides more than 800 non-degree educational programmes. St Petersburg University is a member of 40 international organisations and associations. It actively cooperates with partner universities in the framework of academic mobility programmes. The resource base makes St Petersburg University the leading expert centre in Russia. The Research Park of St Petersburg University – in terms of equipment and technological capabilities – is unique not only in Russia but also in a number of areas of the world. Today, it has 26 resource centres with a total equipment value of 7.5 billion roubles.
